Richard Gachot
artist
In Election Devil, 2004, Gachot takes no prisoners. The devil sticking out his tongue solicits supporters with a phone call. Such calls have become a universal provocation: everyone dislikes them. In this work an array of political parties is identified. While Gachot’s piece leaves us to draw our own conclusions and equate the devil with a particular political candidate, or any political candidate, the gathered buttons, with their names and slogans, suggest a pervasive program of deception: after all, the devil is supposed to be the greatest of all liars. Promises of no taxes and similar inducements imply perpetual bad faith.
